Freight to Great Britain is not planned like a journey within the EU. Franzosini Monaco considers both export and return journeys, including the border paperwork required for the goods.

Destinations in both directions

We assess collection and delivery enquiries for England, Scotland and Wales based on exact addresses. Northern Ireland operates under different customs arrangements: identify the precise destination. Port, route and available capacity are checked for each shipment.

Options for your consignment

A complete invoice, commodity classification, origin, trading parties and their relevant EORI identifiers allow export and import requirements to be assessed. Depending on the crossing the haulier may need a GMR created through GVMS; T1 transit and sanitary controls depend on the cargo and procedure. Border and delivery times cannot be guaranteed.

Plan a shipment that can actually be delivered

A Monaco address and a French address do not create the same collection job. Opening hours, traffic restrictions, loading bays, vehicle height limits and unloading facilities affect the equipment and the price. For a collection in central Monaco, mention underground access, lifts and appointment requirements. In France, give the exact postcode and department: distance from a consolidation point matters as much as the final destination.

Where a customs frontier is involved, seller and buyer must agree the importer of record, who pays duties and taxes, and the applicable Incoterm. Prepare a commercial invoice, packing list and description suitable for tariff classification; transport papers, origin evidence or licences may also be needed. Dispatch country is not necessarily the goods' country of origin. A mismatch in value, commodity code or consignee identity can hold up release.

United Kingdom: both sides of the frontier

From Monaco or France to the UK, or on the return journey, prepare export and import data, not merely a transport document. Identify the relevant EORI numbers, importer, commodity codes, value, origin and Incoterm. UK goods declarations use the Customs Declaration Service (CDS). A haulier may need a Goods Movement Reference (GMR) for a crossing using GVMS; exact requirements depend on port and procedure.

Preferential duty under the EU–UK agreement requires compliance with rules of origin and appropriate evidence: dispatch from France alone is insufficient. Animal, plant or food products may need separate health notifications and inspections. Safety and security filing responsibilities must also be allocated. Acceptance of a declaration, boarding and release after arrival are three different steps.

FAQ

Does a GMR replace a customs declaration?

No. It links required references for certain road crossings; declarations and possible checks remain separate.

When can delivery be expected?

Departure, crossing, declarations, checks and final delivery must be assessed together. An inspection can add hours or days.

Plan the actual journey

For goods going to England, Scotland or Wales, agree the Great Britain importer and GB EORI. For Northern Ireland, request a route-specific check: the requirements are not interchangeable. For a truck using GVMS, establish who creates the GMR, links the required references and confirms validity before boarding. Where T1 transit is relevant, identify the destination office and the party responsible for discharge. On the return, prepare UK export and presentation documents for the arrival side too. Flag health-controlled or licensed goods ahead of time. Accepted declarations, ferry departure and post-check release are separate milestones when estimating delivery. A buyer's planned unloading appointment should follow the assessed border process, not just the sailing timetable.

Choosing road freight

For a full load, check that the vehicle can access the premises and whether both ends require booked slots. For a part load, loading metres, weight and stackability determine the space actually needed. Groupage may involve a hub: use legible labels and packing that protects goods through additional handling.

A CMR consignment note records an international road carriage contract; it does not replace the invoice or customs declaration. If goods arrive damaged, record specific reservations on the delivery paperwork and keep photos and package references. A Monaco–Italy movement and a UK movement with a customs frontier demand different preparation.

Declarations, origin and import charges

Monaco and France are linked by a customs convention; this does not remove procedures at other customs frontiers. Switzerland and Great Britain are outside the EU customs territory; Northern Ireland has distinct arrangements to check separately. Identify the owner, importer and destination country before selecting a procedure. EU customs operators may need an EORI; UK and Swiss requirements differ.

An invoice should describe each line, value, currency, quantity and Incoterm. Commodity classification and origin determine duties and other measures. Preference is not automatic because goods passed through the EU: rules of origin and the prescribed evidence must be met. Customs duty, import VAT and representation fees are separate costs.

A transit procedure may defer payment at an intermediate frontier until the destination office under applicable guarantees; it must still be discharged correctly. Documentary or physical examinations extend the timeline even if an entry was prepared early. Check primary guidance with the European Commission, UK government import guidance and Swiss customs authority.

FAQ

Is a pro forma invoice enough?

It can support an initial enquiry; the final declaration needs transaction-specific commercial and valuation data. Confirm the required evidence with the declarant.

How long does clearance take?

Release can be quick after a complete entry is accepted, but a check, payment or missing document can add hours or days. There is no universal clearance time.
